Water uptake, transport and storage in plant are manipulated by complicated biophysical and biochemical mechanisms. Since the properties of plant tissue are only maintained when the structures stays intact, noninvasive methods are extremely important for water-plant relation researches. NMR, which is nondestructive and noninvasive, has been widely used in medical examination and in porous media analysis. Recently, it is getting more and more attention in plant biology. This presentation will introduce the application of low field NMR in assessing water relations of plant, for instance in imaging the aging process of wheat and in quantifying membrane permeability in plant roots, and discuss its promising prospect in monitoring water transport in Soil-Plant-Atmosphere Continuum.
